Direct Reduced Iron & Vanadium

Ironstone Resources is advancing the commercial development of its Clear Hills iron and vanadium mine and minerals processing project located in the province of Alberta – Canada's economic powerhouse.

The Clear Hills asset contains a long-life, compliant poly-metallic iron and vanadium mineral resource and high quality infrastructure. The project features a low impact, open-pit mine plan with onsite, value-added production of high quality iron metallics and vanadium pentoxide.

Ironstone is currently conducting commercial pilot testing of its innovative Hatch-Ironstone CS iron reduction process and vanadium extraction in advance of commissioning its pre-feasibility study.

Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI)

HBI is a premium quality, high density raw material containing 90-94% total iron (Fe), used in electric arc furnace (EAF) and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking, blast furnace (BF) iron making, and foundry applications. It is essentially a compacted form of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) designed to facilitate easy shipping, handling, and storage.

Demand for iron metallics is growing in established markets implementing EAF steel-making, and is expected to accelerate in Asian markets as energy intensive and polluting traditional furnaces are replaced by EAFs.

Ironstone Resources plans on mining approximately 9 million tonnes of ore per year and 2.5 million tonnes of lignite to produce 2.5 million tonnes of direct reduced iron annually at full production.

Vanadium is an important steel alloying metal as well as a critical
component in vanadium flow batteries used in the renewable energy
storage market.

Vanadium Pentoxide

Although other metals can also have similar effects on steel, only a small amount of vanadium is required to dramatically increase its tensile strength, making vanadium one of the most cost-effective additives in steel alloys. These unique characteristics have made vanadium essential in construction applications worldwide.

Vanadium is poised to play a pivotal role in the commercialization of renewable energy. Renewable energy’s biggest challenge has been the absence of efficient mass storage. To include a high percentage of renewable energy into the power grid reliable storage is needed. Currently, any unused renewable energy that is not used immediately is lost.

Ironstone Resources has a NI-43-101 resource of 2.45 billion pounds of contained Vanadium Pentoxide (V2O5), representing one of the largest compliant vanadium resources in the world. A by-product of the its direct reduced iron process, Ironstone expects to be a low cost producer of approximately 20 million pounds of V2O5 annually at full production.
